Central Question

How do parental beliefs, goal orientations, and behaviors shape children's mastery motivation and learning?

Overview

This research examines the associations between parenting practices and children's motivational development. Key topics include how mothers' belief systems about learning — particularly the pragmatic view of effort versus the incremental view of intelligence — relate to shared-reading behaviors, and how parental mastery and performance goal orientations predict preschoolers' mastery motivation.
